Consultants can be used to apply new knowledge to a problem or just to achieve focus (bringing ‘fresh eyes’) where internal bandwidth is just not available.
Our learning, across the 16+ years we’ve been consulting, is that the consultant’s ability to know what works, and what doesn’t, within the environment that the business operates is often the critical success factor.
After wrapping up a successful project, a client CEO recently told us that he’d hired us (and we’d delivered) because we were, “content consultants, not process consultants”… mature professionals who complement technical know-how with domain and environmental knowledge.
Another factor is breadth. Sustainable solutions usually require inputs beyond the range of an individual – so being able to draw on the talents of a multi-skilled team is important.
